Nicole Vargas

Biography

Nicole is a lecturer at the Australain National University. Nicole obtained her PhD from Charles Sturt University in Australia in 2016 and was a Post Doctoral Research Associate with A/Prof Zac Schlader (University at Bufflo) and Prof Ollie Jay (University of Sydney) between 2017-2022. Nicole investigates mechanisms contributing to vulnerability to extreme heat from a physiological and behavioural perspective with a focus on understanding factors that contribute to cool seeking behaviour during passive and exertional heat stress. She maintains collaborations as a Research Affiliate with the University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH).

Intervention

Title: Behavioral temperature regulation

Description: During the presentation we will review the human behavioral responses during heat exposure. We wiil discuss the importance of thermal discomfort and the physiological and psychological factors influencing cool-seeking during heat stress.

Learning objectives: At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between autonomic and behavioral responses to heat.
  2. Explain the importance of thermal discomfort in cool-seeking behavior.
  3. Describe the factors influencing thermal discomfort during heat exposure.
