The Postoperative Pain Management Service (SAPO) is an interdisciplinary clinical service whose primary mission is to provide personalized pain relief and management for all hospitalized patients who undergo surgery at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI). Consisting of a nurse clinician and an anesthesiologist, the SAPO team makes daily rounds to surgical patients to assess their comfort and adjust their pain management plan as required. To optimally manage acute postoperative pain, the SAPO uses and combines various pain relief techniques, such as multimodal analgesia (a combination of multiple medications), patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and local anesthetics.
