Profile

After earning his degree in medicine from Université de Montréal, Dr. Jean-François Tanguay went on to specialize in internal medicine and cardiology. He then trained in interventional cardiology and research at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) and Duke University.

During his post-doctoral training funded by the Association des cardiologues du Québec (ACQ) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), his work paved the way to the development of the first fully bioabsorbable drug eluting coronary stent. In hemodynamics, he successfully implanted the first bioresorbable stent in North America in a patient treated at the MHI. He continued his research projects with the investigation of methods and treatments to promote vascular healing and reduce thrombo-inflammatory phenomena after percutaneous revascularization and acute coronary syndrome.

A member of the Hemodynamics Service and the Department of Medicine at the MHI, he directs the Coronary Care Unit with a team of cardiologists with expertise in acute coronary artery disease, cardiac imaging and interventional cardiology.  Full professor in the Department of Medicine at Université de Montréal, Dr. Tanguay also directs the university training program in interventional cardiology and  the MD-research program at  this Institution’s Faculty of Medicine.

He has authored or co-authored over 350 scientific publications, abstracts and book chapters in addition to serving as President of the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiology (CAIC) from 2002 to 2005 and being Chair of the Committee for the Antiplatelet Therapy Guidelines of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. These guidelines were published in 2011 and updated in 2013 in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.
