Biography

Ollie Jay is Professor of Heat and Health and Director of the Heat and Health Research Centre  at The University of Sydney. He was recently profiled by The Lancet in their 2021 Heat & Health Series and has led several large-scale projects that have directly influenced international public health heatwave policies in the United States, Europe, and Australia. He has also led extreme heat policy development for Sports Medicine Australia, Tennis Australia (Australian Open), and Cricket Australia, and was the Lead Heat Consultant for the Australian Olympic Team at the Paris 2024 games.

Intervention

Title: Translating physiological research to inform the public health response to extreme heat.

Description: This talk will discuss the importance of human physiological research to understand the impacts of extreme heat on human health, well-being and performance. An emphasis will be placed on how physiological research can (and has) informed the public health response to extreme heat.

Learning objectives: 

  1. Recognize the role and value of human physiological research to inform the public health response to extreme heat;
  2. Understand the the different ways in which human physiological research can be implemented to improve the public health response to extreme heat.
