Angelo Calderone completed his Ph.D in 1992 at the Université de Montréal and continued his post-doctoral studies at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital under the tutelage of Dr. Wilson Colucci. Dr. Calderone is presently a Professor in the department of Physiology at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the Montreal Heart Institute.  During his career, Dr. Calderone has published predominantly in the field of cardiovascular disease. Presently, the main focus of his research consists of elucidating the underlying events implicated in reparative fibrosis and cardiac regeneration. Work from Dr. Calderone’s lab identified a cardiac resident population nestin(+) neural progenitor/stem cells that migrate to the scar and participate directly in scar formation as a novel cellular substrate of angiogenesis. Furthermore, during the reparative fibrotic response, Dr. Calderone’s lab reported the presence of newly formed cardiac myocyte-like cells expressing the intermediate filament protein nestin in both the rodent and human infarcted heart  The appearance of these nestin(+) cardiac myocyte-like cells at the border region of the scar of the ischemically damaged heart supports the premise of cardiac regeneration.
