Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy is used to locate cellular components such as proteins, lipid chains, ions and nucleic acids within the cell. However, the staining process must be conducted on specimens that have been fixed, meaning that the events observed are the reflection of a single moment without any temporal change. The fact that different samples for comparison are processed individually makes quantitative analysis difficult, and this analysis must be supported by biochemical, electrophysiological and molecular biology assays.
Scientists use confocal fluorescence to observe living cells and to view and accurately quantify dynamic phenomena over time. The act of observing cannot affect cellular viability, which is essential for accurate results. This process must be done under physiological conditions that are similar to in vivo conditions.
Intracellular calcium, membranes, organelles, free radicals, FRAP, photomanipulation, fluorescent proteins, migration analyses, 4-dimensional reconstruction, and cell-cell interactions are examples of the investigations of living cells that are performed with confocal microscopes at the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre.

- Acquisition, processing and analysis of confocal fluorescence images for research teams at the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre and their research colleagues.
- Development of specific cellular imaging techniques for each research project.
- Training for researchers/students/research staff members on fluorescence staining techniques, the use of confocal microscopes, as well as 3D reconstruction/analysis software.
